Teeth in a day, also called All-on-4, replaces a full set of teeth using just four implants. Depending on how stable the implants are, you leave either with a fixed bridge on the same day or with a temporary denture while your final teeth are made. It can suit people whose gums are healthy and who can keep up good daily cleaning. Here is how same day dental implants work, who they suit and what to expect.

A full set of teeth makes eating and talking easier, which can improve your confidence and quality of life. Four implants are spread evenly across the jaw to hold the replacement teeth. The two back implants are angled at 45 degrees. This improves stability, makes use of the stronger bone at the front of the jaw and avoids the upper sinuses.

How teeth in a day work

Once fitted, the teeth are fixed in place, so you do not take them out. Because the implants sit in the bone, they also help preserve your bone levels. Unlike a conventional bridge, the treatment does not involve shaping healthy teeth to support it.

If you are missing one or a few teeth rather than a full set, our main dental implants page covers single implants and implant-supported bridges.

Who is a good candidate?

Everyone has a thorough assessment first, because implants work best in people who are suitable for them. A few things affect whether teeth in a day is right for you:

  • Gum health: any gum disease must be treated before implants are placed. This may mean a professional clean and better cleaning at home, and severe cases may need a periodontist. Our gum disease treatment page explains the options.
  • Smoking and diabetes: both are risk factors. Smoking does not rule you out, but it does raise the risk of an implant failing.
  • Daily care: you need to be able to brush and clean between your teeth every day, before and after treatment.

The simplest way to find out is to talk it through with us at a consultation.

What the treatment involves

Our teeth in a day team includes implant surgeon Dr Viraj Patel, principal dentist Dr Chetan Kaher and specialist periodontist Dr Evdokia Chasioti. Treatment follows these steps:

  1. A consultation with your dentist.
  2. A full jaw OPG X-ray and a CT scan to check the length, width and density of your bone.
  3. A thorough examination to check for any problems that need treating first.
  4. Placement of the four implants under local anaesthesia, in sterile surgical conditions. Sedation is available if you are nervous or the surgery is more complex.
  5. Depending on how stable the implants are, a fixed bridge is fitted the same day, or a temporary denture is provided until your final teeth are ready.

If nerves are holding you back, our guide to IV sedation and inhalation sedation explains how each one feels.

The months after treatment

Over time, the implants fuse with your jawbone, a process called osseointegration. This is what gives your new teeth their stability. Once healing is complete, after 3 to 6 months, your temporary teeth are replaced with a permanent set. Keep up daily brushing and cleaning between your teeth throughout.

Some pain and swelling around the implants is possible, and over-the-counter painkillers should help until it settles. Nerves in the lower jaw could be disturbed or damaged, causing tingling or numbness, so your dentist uses X-rays or CT scans to locate them and takes care to avoid them.

Weighing up the pros and cons

Teeth in a day has clear advantages:

  • New teeth on the same day as your implants
  • Fixed teeth that do not need to be removed
  • The ability to eat most foods, including firmer ones, once you have healed
  • One of the closest options to natural teeth
  • Can be cost-effective in the long term
  • Helps preserve bone levels

There are trade-offs too. The initial cost is high, it involves surgery, the implants take time to fully fuse with the bone, and the temporary teeth need replacing with a permanent set once you have healed. You can browse examples in our All-on-4 gallery.

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth in a day the same as All-on-4?

Yes. Both names describe the same treatment: a full set of teeth fixed onto four implants, often fitted on the day the implants are placed.

Will I leave with teeth on the same day?

Yes. Depending on how stable your implants are, you will have either a fixed bridge fitted that day or a temporary denture until your final teeth are ready.

Does the procedure hurt?

It is carried out under local anaesthesia, so you should feel no pain during the procedure. Sedation is available if you are nervous. Some pain or swelling afterwards is possible.

Can I have teeth in a day if I smoke?

Smoking does not rule you out, but it does raise the risk of implant failure. Diabetes is also a risk factor.

Where can I get all on 4 dental implants near me?

If you live in North or North West London, we offer All-on-4 at both our Finchley and St John’s Wood practices.

How long until I get my permanent teeth?

After 3 to 6 months, once healing is complete and the implants have fused with the bone.
