Gum Contouring London for Gummy Smiles

Gummy Smile Treatment

Gingival recontouring is performed when the teeth are significantly covered by gum tissue, causing a “gummy smile”. The gum lift London treatment is used to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Gingival recontouring, or gum lift London, is the re-shaping of the gum margin by removing a small amount of gum tissue. It is usually performed to increase the crown length of natural teeth or crowns in order to improve cosmetic appearance.

The overall result that the patient can expect from gingival recontouring is an uplifted, fuller-looking smile. Due to minor surgery and possible exposure to dentine, patients may experience some sensitivity for the first couple of days after treatment, but this is usually temporary.

Everyone’s gumlines are different. Some are high and some are low and some are in between. If you’re self-conscious about your gum line, there are ways to change it through the help of gummy smile treatment in London.

Gummy smile treatment in London is done by a dental specialist to reshape or re-sculpt your gum line. The process involves removing excess gum tissue around your teeth.

What Does Gingival Recontouring Involve?

Gum contouring is usually done by a periodontist or a cosmetic dentist. It’s an in-office procedure that’s typically done in one visit.  Before the doctor starts, you’ll receive local anaesthesia to numb the gum area.

The doctor will then use a soft tissue laser or scalpel to remove excess gum tissue and resculpt the gum line to expose more of the tooth.

Gum Lift London Treatment – CASE 2

Gingival recontouring or gummy smile treatment in London is performed when the teeth are significantly covered by gum tissue, causing a “gummy smile”. It is the re-shaping of the gum margin by removing a small amount of gum tissue. Also known as gum lift london, It is usually performed to increase the crown length of natural teeth or crowns in order to improve cosmetic appearance to provide more tooth structure to place a crown or veneer on (known as “crown lengthening”). The overall result that the patient can expect from gingival recontouring is an uplifted, fuller-looking smile. Due to minor surgery and possible exposure to dentine, patients may experience some sensitivity for the first couple of days after treatment, but this is usually temporary and reversible.

The procedure carried out at Smile Cliniq in London is simple and generally pain-free and is performed under local anaesthetic. If needed, sedation can be used to keep you comfortable and relaxed. When removing the gum tissue, care is taken to manipulate the natural arch-shape of the margin between the tooth and the gums.  The future shape of tooth and gum is re-designed with wax on the cast (model of patient’s teeth) and in certain cases, a surgical splint/stent is made, to guide the surgeon as to where the gum needs to be removed.

Gingival Recontouring FAQs

The length of the procedure will vary depending on the extent of the contouring and the amount of re-sculpting that’s needed. Generally, gum contouring takes about 1 to 2 hours.

If you have a gummy smile, gum contouring may be a treatment option. But your dentist will first try to treat any gum disease with nonsurgical options. This may include dental hygiene to restore gum health.

If these efforts don’t work, your dentist may recommend a treatment such as pocket reduction surgery on the gums and surrounding bone to save a tooth. Or you may need a regeneration procedure to regrow damaged bone and gum tissue.

You will be given local anaesthesia before the procedure starts to numb the gums so that you won’t feel pain while the doctor is working on your mouth. You may, however, experience some tenderness and numbness after. After the surgery, your doctor may prescribe a pain reliever, or you can take over-the-counter pain medication.

Gum contouring involves little downtime, but complete healing might take days or weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery. You may have to limit some activities for a day or two based on how you feel and any tenderness you may have. Since your gums and mouth will likely feel sensitive at first, you’ll want to eat soft foods for about 2 to 3 days after the procedure.
