10 Tips to avoid getting tooth decay

Last Updated on 12/02/2026 by Dr Chetan Kaher

  1. Avoid eating sweets too often.
  2. When eating sweets, eat them all at one time rather than spread out across the day.
  3. Avoid drinking fizzy drinks. If you do, drink through a straw.
  4. Brush your teeth twice a day, with a fluoride toothpaste.
  5. Floss or use inter-dental brushes at least once a day before brushing to prevent decay between the teeth.
  6. Use a mouthwash that constains fluoride.
  7. Use the CORRECT brushing technique.
  8. Drink plenty of water after eating sweets.
  9. Visit the dentist every 6 months for a routine check-up to detect early signs of decay.
  10. Have a professional clean with the dentist/hygienist to remove any plaque or tartar.
